GO Transit has announced that it has begun work on its new station in Hamilton on James Street North.  This station will serve as a second station in Hamilton, along with Hunter Street station.  This new station will be located along the CNR mainline in Hamilton, whereas Hunter Street is the former TH&B station located on the CPR mainline.

The current station is located near GO Transit’s former station on the CNR line, which GO Transit left in the mid 1990s.

The new station is part of GO Transit’s expansion to Hamilton and onto Niagara Falls.  The current station, due to freight demand along the line, cannot accommodate an increase in service, plus does not continue along the same rail line that serves the stations in St. Catharines and Niagara Falls that GO uses.

The new station is expected to be fully operational in the summer of 2015 in time for the Pan Am Games.  While Toronto is the official host of those games, some events will take place in Hamilton, and the new station will allow GO Transit to provide a direct link between Toronto and Hamilton.

GO Transit currently offers four trains a day in and out of its Hunter Street system, but only Monday to Friday during the rush hour.  Outside of rush hour, passengers have to travel by GO bus between Aldershot and Hamilton as the trains currently only go as far as Aldershot.  The new station will eventually allow for all day train service to and from Hamilton although at the current time GO is expected to retain its Hunter Street station.
